Chapter 565: Chapter 565 Retaliation
Perhaps it was because she had walked too much today, or perhaps it was due to the shock she had received, but Ling Ruonan began to feel the unstoppable tug of sleepiness as she spoke.
Eventually, she sheepishly told Luo Ziling that she was quite tired and would take a nap. She planned to go back to her room and sleep after Wuyue returned. When Wuyue got back, she still wanted to have a proper talk with Luo Ziling about today’s events.
After saying this, she lay down on Luo Ziling’s bed and fell asleep.
Seeing Ling Ruonan looking so weary, Luo Ziling also felt quite heartbroken. After tucking her in, he turned off the lights, ready to get some sleep himself.
But just as he had begun to doze off, he heard some movement downstairs. Knowing that Wuyue had returned, he quickly got out of bed, tip-toeing down the stairs.
Indeed, Wuyue had come back. Upon entering the living room, she was preparing to go upstairs to report to Ling Ruonan.
However, before she could take the stairs, she saw Luo Ziling and slowed her steps.
“My mom just fell asleep, she’s exhausted,” Luo Ziling whispered to Wuyue after descending the staircase, “How did things go?”
Wuyue hesitated for a moment but then spoke, “Young master, the bullet that hit you has been found. It’s indeed a 7.62mm sniper rifle round. You were very lucky—it seems the bullet just grazed your bulletproof vest and then dropped to the ground when you turned. If the angle had been slightly different, it would have definitely penetrated the vest and entered your body.”
“Damn it, if I find out who took a potshot at us, I’ll blow their head off,” Luo Ziling said angrily, cursing after hearing what Wuyue had said, continuing heatedly, “This is too much, to dare to strike at us like that. By the way, did you find out who planned it?”
“It’s very difficult to find out the real mastermind behind this because even if the shooter is caught, they won’t reveal who ordered them. In fact, they might not even know who did—their only role was to get paid and do the job,” Wuyue explained apologetically before admitting her own mistake, “Young master, it was my negligence today. I failed to adequately protect the young lady.”
Seeing the remorseful expression on Wuyue’s face, Luo Ziling had a similar feeling. He quickly shook his head, “You can’t blame yourself, I didn’t anticipate something like this happening. If I hadn’t insisted on taking my mom shopping, this wouldn’t have happened. I won’t dare to do it again.”
“The young lady has always been very careful to conceal her whereabouts. She hasn’t made public appearances like she did today for many years,” Wuyue said before sadly lowering her head, “Over the years, many have wanted to kill her. She has made quite a few enemies, and with past grievances, she usually has an adequate number of bodyguards with her on her travels. She’s faced many assassination attempts over the years and has been lucky to have never had an accident.”
“You’ve worked hard. In the future, continue to be vigilant; we can’t afford a single mistake in such matters,” Luo Ziling instructed Wuyue before adding, “If we ever go out like this again, we need to make sure to do a good job with our disguises.”
Luo Ziling decided he definitely needed to learn Disguise Skills well from Shanque, to avoid such dangerous situations in the future.
“Young master, then I will be off. Since the young lady is sleeping, I won’t disturb her,” Wuyue said, turning around and leaving the room, Luo Ziling unsure where she might be heading off to.
When Luo Ziling returned to the room, he saw that Ling Ruonan was still sleeping soundly. He didn’t wake her, instead moving to the other side of the bed to sleep.
In the middle of the night, Ling Ruonan did wake up, but she did not leave. Instead, she continued to lie in Luo Ziling’s bed and sleep.
It wasn’t until daybreak that she got up, being as quiet as possible not to wake Luo Ziling, and returned to her own room.
Luo Ziling had actually awakened, but he didn’t open his eyes until after Ling Ruonan gently closed the door behind her.
It felt wonderful to have his mother by his side while sleeping, and Luo Ziling felt as if he were getting younger. Sleeping in the same bed as Ling Ruonan a few times, he didn’t think much of it, nor did he consider that he had grown up and such shared sleep with his mother was now inappropriate.
As a child, what he longed for most was to be held by his parents and to fall asleep securely. Being able to act spoiled next to them while he slept was something he craved. Only now, at this age, had he finally gotten the chance to do so.
Having been deprived of this kind of affection as a child, now that he had received such care, Luo Ziling treasured it deeply.
And Ling Ruonan’s thoughts were similar.
Although she had spent quite a bit of time with Luo Ziling recently, she always felt she owed him too much and that the time spent together was still too little.
She had endless things to say and wanted to be by Luo Ziling’s side forever, so even when she felt extremely sleepy, she didn’t leave, until she fell asleep. Her son was sleeping within arm’s reach, a single turn would bring her in contact with him, and Ling Ruonan felt deeply satisfied. She hoped to give more maternal love to her son, so no matter what he did, even if she thought Luo Ziling was wrong, she wouldn’t blame him.
Ling Ruonan didn’t really approve of Luo Ziling being with Yang Qingyin, knowing it would bring a lot of trouble for both him and herself, but she still let it be. The moment she stepped out of Luo Ziling’s room and gently closed the door, her heart was filled with warmth.
She didn’t leave immediately, but stood quietly against the door for a good while before she moved on.
After returning to her room and freshening up briefly, Ling Ruonan went downstairs to prepare breakfast for Luo Ziling.
When she was getting ready to cook, Wuyue came in. He informed her of everything that had happened the previous night, including the progress of the police investigation, and explained why he had not reported immediately last night.
Ling Ruonan was in a rather good mood after spending half the night talking with Luo Ziling and sleeping together; any unpleasant feelings due to the shooting incident had already vanished. Therefore, she didn’t blame Wuyue for anything, but after hearing his report, her mood worsened.
The shooter had used a sniper rifle against them, and Ling Ruonan was well aware that the enemy’s intent was to kill her right before Great Grandfather’s ninetieth birthday. With this in mind, she had an initial guess as to who was behind the assassination attempt.
Except for those in the Ling Family who feared Luo Ziling would be accepted, feared their mother and son’s position would be recognized by the Ling Family elders, who else could it be? She was surprisingly devoid of anger, only speaking softly to Wuyue, “I understand. Get prepared. We will leave at nine o’clock sharp, heading to the old house.”
“Yes,” Wuyue was not surprised by Ling Ruonan’s reaction.
Wuyue knew that Ling Ruonan was at her most dangerous not when she showed great anger, but when she remained calm in situations that should have infuriated her. Such calm often indicated that the rage inside Ling Ruonan had reached a certain peak.
Wuyue knew that Ling Ruonan was preparing for retaliation. She believed that before long, Ling Ruonan would instruct her to carry out a plan for revenge, and the target of that vengeance would undoubtedly be miserable.
