Seeing Luo Ziling’s astonished face, Ling Ruonan didn’t continue speaking. Instead, she let out a bitter laugh before saying softly, “Alright, many things can’t be planned in advance. There’s always a way out when we reach the mountain. No matter what happens, Mom will face it with you. Everyone should act impulsively a few times in their life; whether it’s right or wrong doesn’t matter.”
Luo Ziling was surprised once again at Ling Ruonan’s philosophical words and quickly replied with deep respect, “Mom, I’ll remember your words. I will act as rationally as possible and try to make as few mistakes as I can.”
Ling Ruonan was quite satisfied with Luo Ziling’s answer.
She didn’t dwell on this issue any longer but instead started talking about other matters: things to be attentive to during the next day’s birthday celebration and how to interact with elders and peers. She had already discussed some of these matters before, so she didn’t have to say much more that evening, merely reminding Luo Ziling to behave rationally and respectfully towards his elders and to treat his peers with courtesy while maintaining his own dignity.
As their conversation progressed, Ling Ruonan shifted the topic to several people from the Fang Family.
“Fang Zhonghua did have a good relationship with your father; during his time in Yanjing, Fang Zhonghua was one of his few friends and offered him a lot of help. Since he hasn’t forgotten their old friendship, you should also try to spend more time with him; he should be able to help you again. If he doesn’t know that Fang Dongxun’s injury was caused by you, and you manage to cure Fang Dongxun, he will definitely be grateful to you. Fang Dongxun might also feel grateful to you and get rid of any prejudice he has against you. Who knows, in the future, Fang Dongxun might even become one of your staunchest supporters. There’s a saying, isn’t there? ‘No discord, no concord.'”
Ling Ruonan spoke these words without interruption, while Luo Ziling listened very carefully.
“Fang Dongxun is relatively simple-minded. His biggest flaw is his fondness for women; he loves the new and loathes the old and also likes to frequent nightclubs. If you become friends in the future, make sure you don’t pick up these bad habits. Actually, other scions of wealthy families all have similar dispositions, it’s just that they’re not as high-profile as Fang Dongxun. All things considered, Fang Dongxun is a little better than those other scions. If you can put him to work for you, it would certainly be a big help.” As if worried that Luo Ziling wouldn’t understand, Ling Ruonan further explained, “Fang Dongxun has always had conflicts with other wealthy scions. You can use him to deal with those people.”
After hearing this, Luo Ziling suddenly realized the depth of these words and was surprised at how calculative Ling Ruonan could be. It seemed his mother was quite adept at using others.
Ling Ruonan continued, “Many people are destined not to be your friends, but you should try to acquire as many allies as possible. Having scions of wealthy families as friends and supporters will make your endeavors much easier. Remember, utilizing the rivalries between wealthy scions for your own benefit can be twice as effective with half the effort.”
Luo Ziling nodded vigorously, feeling as though a light had dawned on him.
Ling Ruonan went on, “Today, the target of their hostility was probably me, not you, but regardless of who they’re targeting, we can learn something from tonight’s shooting incident: our opponents want to eliminate us physically. Since they are so ruthless, we have to be a bit harsher; without showing them our strength, they’ll truly think we’re easy to bully. If you clash with them in the future, blow things out of proportion. As long as you don’t kill them, you can do anything during an open conflict.”
Ling Ruonan’s calmly spoken severe advice left Luo Ziling speechless.
He understood the unspoken implication: if the struggle was in the shadows, it was permissible to kill the opponent.
His beautiful mother’s merciless nature was certainly a shock.
However, thinking back on the dangerous events of the evening, Luo Ziling felt a sense of resignation.
If the opponents had acted in such a way, retaliating with the same methods shouldn’t be surprising.
Ling Ruonan’s next few words left Luo Ziling dumbfounded once again.
“You can’t have too much contact with Fang Qianqian. That woman is too crafty, and her romantic escapades are never-ending; you shouldn’t play the role of her lover. Chen Xiaoyi, on the other hand, could be useful to you; she has always prided herself on her integrity, and she’s quite competent. Since you have a grudge against Chen Jiahai, you might as well use his sister to work for you, or use Chen Xiaoyi to scheme against Chen Jiahai, which could yield good results.”
Luo Ziling didn’t expect his mother to be so pragmatic, actually advising him to make good use of Chen Xiaoyi.
Just a few days ago, hadn’t she advised him to stay away from those women to avoid trouble?
Seeing Luo Ziling’s shocked expression, Ling Ruonan said lightly, “The Chen Family has always kicked us when we’re down, both in the past and the present. There’s nothing wrong with getting a bit of revenge through some tactics. It’s not always about you deceiving them; often, they are willing to help you and commit to you willingly, so don’t feel guilty about it. Also, if some of the young women in the Ling Family develop infatuations, you can make use of that too. Our mother and son are currently too weak to confront them directly; often, in order to survive, we have to resort to unscrupulous means. I don’t want us to die without understanding why.”
“Okay,” Ling Ruonan’s words left Luo Ziling feeling somewhat overwhelmed, but thought of the night’s events and his own encounters with attacks ultimately made him nod.
Engaging in unsavory actions was surely kinder than stabbing the opponent with a knife or shooting them dead, right?
When it had come to a fight for life itself with the opponent, did other considerations even matter?
Then, Ling Ruonan added, “Often, being too compassionate can come at a great cost. Your father suffered a lot for that reason; he was too kind-hearted, and you can’t afford to be like him. We must make our enemies understand that provoking us and making us angry will cost them dearly, even their lives.”
Luo Ziling fell silent for a while before nodding again.
Seeing that Luo Ziling had lost his smile, Ling Ruonan felt a pang of pity and drew him closer, comforting softly, “Ling’er, to ensure we three can eventually be together and to keep from being harmed by others, we often have to be a bit more heartless. I, too, was once a very kind person, but reality has pushed me to become what I am today. Who would have thought that even our closest relatives, even our own siblings, would scheme against us?”
Luo Ziling was at a loss for words, unable to respond.
