“Let’s go. I owe you a meal, I’ll treat,” Shen Fei patted his chest, “If I don’t, I’ll feel guilty. Isn’t that right, Little Fatty?” He couldn’t resist pinching Little Fatty’s chubby cheeks, finding it utterly fun.
Left without a choice, Tang Yuxin hopped into the car, joined by the man who refused to let go of her chubby little brother, Uncle Gu.
Chengcheng was quite the chatterbox, constantly bombarding Gu Ning with endless whys. No matter how abstract his questions were, Gu Ning could always provide satisfactory replies.
Little Fatty was growing fonder of Uncle Gu by the minute. He sat on Gu Ning’s lap, clutching Gu Ning’s hand, giggling non-stop.
The car stopped in front of a small restaurant that seemed to be a private kitchen. The place was scarcely populated but had a nice ambiance. Only upon entering did Tang Yuxin discover it was a courtyard, not unlike her own, minus the prime location. But it was nice enough, and perhaps the familiar layout invoked a sense of fondness in her.
The uncomplicated Little Fatty, who loved observing flowers and plants, squatted on the ground to poke at the greenery as soon as he stepped in. Tang Yuxin, meanwhile, was a bit nervous. Their relationship really wasn’t that close, after all.
“Little Fatty, come here.”
Shen Fei beckoned to Little Fatty, and Chengcheng ran over with his chubby little legs and naturally climbed onto Gu Ning’s lap. Well, it looked like somebody was addicted to it, wasn’t he?
“Little Fatty, come order.”
Shen Fei placed the menu in front of Chengcheng. Chengcheng nibbled on his little finger, then began randomly pointing at items. Whatever he chose, Shen Fei ordered.
Tang Yuxin turned away, shielding her eyes. She couldn’t watch this anymore. It was too heart-wrenching.
Chengcheng, does our family not feed you enough or clothe you enough, that you are so embarrassing? She felt like crying from the shame.
Gu Ning took a tissue and wiped the drool off Little Fatty’s mouth. Little Fatty happily clung to his neck, babbling about something. It was all baby talk, and adults couldn’t understand it.
Gu Ning, however, occasionally responded, making Little Fatty even happier. It was as if he had found a kindred spirit. He even refused to leave Gu Ning’s lap for Tang Yuxin’s arms.
He called him ‘Brother’ affectionately. Very, very affectionate indeed.
Alright then, he had changed from calling him Uncle to Brother.
In no time, the food Little Fatty ordered arrived. No, correction, the food that Little Fatty demanded, since Tang Yuxin didn’t care and would eat whatever was ordered. As long as Little Fatty’s stomach was filled, Shen Fei didn’t mind either and let Little Fatty have the final say.
Little Fatty, who didn’t know what was good to eat, only chose dishes that were visually appealing.
He sat next to Gu Ning, who patiently fed him. Each bite sent Little Fatty into a satisfactory squint, looking so adorable.
However, after a few bites only, his little belly was already full.
“Are you full yet?” Shen Fei poked Little Fatty’s bulging belly.
Alright, he looked like a little watermelon now. So it was safe to assume he was full.
“Yup, I’m full, but Chengcheng can still eat a big apple,” Little Fatty clenched his little fist, emphasizing that he still had plenty of room in his stomach.
Tang Yuxin almost spat the soup she had just sipped.
She would never again take Little Fatty out for a meal; he was unbearably embarrassing.
After the meal, Chengcheng refused to walk. He wanted ‘Brother Gu’ to carry him because Brother Gu was the tallest and could let him see far. Besides, Brother Gu could sway him back and forth, just like riding in a car. Such fun!
When they returned to the hospital, they found Tang Zhinian anxiously waiting outside. He merely went to the restroom only to discover upon his return that Little Fatty and his sister had disappeared.
Had the duty nurse not told him that two suit-clad men had taken his children out for dinner, claiming to be from the security company, he might have worked himself into illness. As he paced back and forth, he noticed them coming in. Seeing the two men in suits, he took a liking. Especially the one cradling Little Fatty, who was fast asleep, drooling on his shoulder.
That man didn’t seem to mind, carefully holding his Little Fatty.
He hurriedly walked over.
“Dad…” Tang Yuxin quickened her pace upon seeing Tang Zhinian.
Tang Zhinian patted his daughter’s head and extended his hand to take Little Fatty.
Gu Ning handed Little Fatty to Tang Zhinian who noticed upon picking up his son that he was gnawing on his chubby hand. His little belly was full, apparently well-fed. Even his belly was so round; was he still hungry?
“Who are these two…” Tang Zhinian asked his daughter
“Uncle, hello. I’m Shen Fei. This is Gu Ning,” Shen Fei introduced himself, pointing to Gu Ning. “He’s Gu Ning. Yuxin saved both of our lives. My leg was supposed to be amputated back then. If it weren’t for Yuxin, I wouldn’t even have my leg now.”
Tang Zhinian glanced at Shen Fei’s legs, his heart aching. What a fine lad, nearly losing his legs, what hardship he must’ve endured!
He looked at Gu Ning who only nodded in acknowledgment. Despite not being much of a talker, he didn’t come across as cold. Noticing the epaulettes on his shoulder, Tang Zhinian was taken aback. So young, yet already a major.
“Uncle, we’re off to see a friend,” Shen Fei was still smiling, the kind of smile that grows on you. As for Gu Ning, his usual expression didn’t change much. But now that the icy aloofness seemed to have thawed a bit, it felt like the distance between them had shrunk.
“Uncle, goodbye,” Gu Ning said, nodding lightly. Odd, it felt strange hearing these words from him. Gu Ning should have maintained his cool persona.
Yes, he should be aloof, stand-offish and reserved. Yet, he actually said it.
Tang Zhinian patted his son’s butt, “Both of these young men seem quite nice.”
“Dad, if they were your sons-in-law, would you approve?”
