Chapter 283: Story 283: The Fractured Path

Damien’s hand still tingled from his brief contact with the amulet as he and Mira retreated, the rumble of awakening evil intensifying behind them. They’d barely made it up the stairs of the basement before a wall of force threw them back into the open. The air turned thick with a sour stench, and shadows flickered unnaturally against the warehouse walls.

"Damien, that was no ordinary amulet," Mira panted, glancing over her shoulder. "It’s like he left a piece of himself there to ward off intruders."

Damien steadied her, his eyes set and determined. "Then that piece must be crucial to the Zombie King’s power. Destroying it could weaken him."

They hurried through the dilapidated complex, each corner more silent than the last. But soon, the quiet was shattered as they were ambushed by a group of King’s elite soldiers, undead with a strange, dark glint of awareness in their eyes. These zombies moved with eerie precision, blocking each exit with an intentionality that made Damien uneasy. There was no mistaking it—the King had adapted, and now his minions held orders, strategy.

Damien moved instinctively, his blade a whirl of silver cutting through the close-quarters combat. Beside him, Mira took aim, each shot finding its mark as they fought in tandem, covering one another’s vulnerabilities. Yet, the longer they fought, the stronger the undead seemed to grow, fueled by the King’s dark magic.

As they began to tire, Damien noticed a faint red glow emanating from his hand—the hand that had touched the amulet. The light pulsed as though responding to his heartbeat, creating a tremor that coursed through his body. The undead seemed drawn to it, their eyes locking on his hand with a collective hunger.

"We need to use this," he shouted to Mira. "It’s attracting them—I think it’s the key!"

Mira glanced at the pulsating light and nodded, understanding his unspoken plan. With careful steps, they lured the zombies back to the warehouse basement. Once inside, Damien held up his hand, the light intensifying with his focus. The undead were transfixed, frozen as if bound by the glow. Mira swiftly moved to barricade the exits, trapping the zombies in the room with the amulet.

"Now, break it!" Damien yelled, his voice filled with the tension of battle and the promise of liberation. Mira aimed her weapon at the amulet, her shot ringing out with a clear, resounding crack as the ancient object shattered.

A wave of energy pulsed out, disintegrating the undead soldiers instantly, their ashes scattering across the ground. The oppressive force in the air dissipated, replaced by a strange calm.

Damien collapsed against the wall, breathing heavily, his hand no longer glowing. Mira leaned beside him, her expression one of relief tempered by the recognition of the challenges ahead.

"One piece down," Damien said, his voice filled with a quiet determination. "But this isn’t over."

Mira gave a small nod, a glint of affection softening her gaze. "With any luck, we’ll find the rest… together." Discover hidden tales at NovelBin.Côm
