Chapter 282: Story 282: Descent into Ruins

Damien and Mira navigated a labyrinth of crumbling warehouses, remnants of an industrial district that had seen better days. The silence weighed heavily, broken only by the occasional crunch of debris beneath their boots. Mira glanced at Damien, her eyes sharp as she scanned their path, feeling a growing tension in the air.

"We’re close to the perimeter," she whispered, pointing to a set of looming concrete buildings ahead. This was the rumored hive, where the Zombie King’s elite followers gathered. If they could find a weak spot in the King’s forces here, it could lead to a turning point in the fight against the undead army.

As they moved deeper into the complex, Damien caught a fleeting glimpse of something eerie—a fleeting shadow, shifting in and out of the beams of fading sunlight. He tightened his grip on his weapon, glancing back at Mira with a silent nod.

The quiet was soon shattered by an unearthly screech as a pack of mutated zombies emerged from the shadows, their eyes glowing with a dangerous intelligence. These were no ordinary undead; their movements were quicker, more precise. Damien immediately lunged forward, his blade slicing through the air. Mira, standing her ground, fired off her crossbow, each shot hitting its mark with deadly accuracy.

"Damien!" she called out as one of the creatures lunged at him from the side. In a swift motion, he ducked, plunging his blade into its chest and yanking it free, the creature crumpling to the ground.

The last of the pack fell, and they found themselves alone once more. Mira breathed heavily, casting a wary glance around the room. "They’re stronger every time," she murmured, frustration evident in her voice.

Damien placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder. "They’re just obstacles. The King’s influence won’t stop us." His words held a new intensity, almost as if they were as much a promise to her as they were a vow to himself. Explore hidden tales at NovelBin.Côm

Their journey led them down into a basement hidden beneath one of the warehouses, the air growing colder and damp as they descended. The flickering light from Damien’s flashlight revealed old, water-stained walls and symbols painted in dark red, signs of rituals meant to strengthen the undead.

"This is where he’s pulling his power from," Mira whispered, her voice tense. They continued forward, coming to a door at the end of the hallway.

Opening it cautiously, they found a room filled with ancient artifacts, each one radiating a malevolent energy. At the center of the room was a stone altar, where an eerie green light pulsed, illuminating the dim space. It was there that Damien saw it: a dark amulet, the rumored source of the King’s growing strength.

Without hesitation, Damien stepped forward, reaching out to seize it. Just as his fingers brushed against the amulet, an icy chill surged up his arm, freezing him in place.

"Damien!" Mira shouted, lunging forward to pull him back. The two stumbled backward as the ground beneath them shook, an ominous rumbling filling the room. The Zombie King was aware of their presence now.

And he was coming.
