Chapter 88: On the Run
"They're here, they're here!"
The dormitory door swung open once again, and Wang Jie groggily turned over in bed, feeling that the dorm was unusually noisy today.
Wen Yang rushed to Ning Chu's side, carrying a plastic bag. As he busied himself, he asked, "Shaoqing, when did you get back?"
"I just got here a few minutes ago. Where's the Montmorillonite powder? Where did you put it?"
"Are you having diarrhea? It’s in the cabinet below."
"Ning Chu's stomach is hurting, isn't it?"
"He..." Wen Yang started to answer instinctively but then paused and changed his response. "He's got a stomachache, but Montmorillonite powder is for diarrhea; it won't help."
Zhang Shaoqing suddenly realized, leaning in to watch Wen Yang mix hot water and brown sugar. He teased, "Is he on his period? Why is he drinking brown sugar water?"
"It helps with stomachaches too."
Ning Chu weakly responded, "Yeah."
It was said that brown sugar water could alleviate period pain, but he vaguely remembered reading somewhere that the effects were almost the same as glucose water—in essence, it was just for replenishing energy.
But wait! Wen Yang hadn't even asked him what kind of stomach pain he was experiencing!
What if it really was diarrhea? How could Wen Yang be so sure it was just a stomachache? Brown sugar water was more commonly associated with period cramps, something you’d give your girlfriend!
Suspicious, Ning Chu looked up, only to find a cup of brown sugar water already being held to his lips.
Wen Yang glanced down at him. "Drink."
"Oh."
Ning Chu obediently held the cup with both hands, blew on it a few times, and then cautiously sipped the brown sugar water.
He began to seriously doubt whether Wen Yang's mind was working properly.
He looked up, eyeing Wen Yang as he retrieved painkillers.
This guy had seriously questioned his gender last time, and now he seemed to be treating him like a girl with menstrual cramps... Could it be that Wen Yang was already convinced he was a girl?
But he just looked like a girl! He was still living in a boys' dormitory—Wen Yang’s thinking had to be messed up!
He still had his manhood! It was just... a bit smaller.
After drinking a few sips of brown sugar water and taking the painkillers, Ning Chu's body seemed to feel a bit better, whether due to the medicine or just psychological comfort.
He turned to see Zhang Shaoqing already back at his computer, then looked up again to find Wen Yang standing nearby, his eyes filled with concern and gentleness.
It sent chills down his spine!
What was going on? Why did it feel like their friendship was about to capsize?
Ning Chu couldn't figure it out.
He had been acting over the top all week, following Wen Yang everywhere, even supervising him when he went to the bathroom. Whenever Wen Yang talked to a girl, Ning Chu would immediately drag him away.
He had even rudely stopped Wen Yang’s private tutoring with Shan Shan, avoided encounters with plot-related female characters, and yanked Wen Yang away the moment any girl tried to talk to him... Honestly, he felt like a pervert or a yandere.
After a week of this, any man should logically be angry or fed up by now, right?
So why did it seem like Wen Yang was actually getting more attached to him?
"Dammit, a masochist..."
There was no mention of Wen Yang being a masochist in the book!
Ning Chu muttered under his breath, his face looking slightly better as the pain subsided, but he still felt drained. Propping his head on one hand, he lazily clicked through web pages on his computer.
Wen Yang’s gentle gaze made him feel like he was sitting on pins and needles. Although it was just a guess, he thought it might be time to consider running away.
If things kept going like this, even if he managed to stay a man, he might end up losing more than he bargained for.
Given Wen Yang's strength, there was a high chance he'd end up in a proctology department.
As for getting rid of Wen Yang permanently...
That kind of thing was just like fantasizing while reading a cheesy novel—something that might satisfy you in your imagination but was impossible to do in reality.
Seeing Ning Chu's tense body relax a bit, Wen Yang poured another cup of hot water and asked, "Feeling better?"
"Yeah..."
"I'm going to the cafeteria for dinner later."
Ning Chu waved his hand. "Go ahead, I'll order delivery."
The persistent stomach pain had completely drained his energy. Just this once, nothing should go wrong, right?
"Should I bring you a Coke?"
"No, I'm sick of it."
Ning Chu keenly sensed Wen Yang’s probing, but how could he dare drink Coke now? These days, he probably wouldn’t even dare to wash his face with anything but warm water.
Only after the dorm door closed behind Wen Yang did Ning Chu look up and see that he was finally alone.
His anxiety grew, fearing that Wen Yang might get involved with some girl or, worse, attract one himself... This made his already unsettled mood, caused by the stomach pain, even more agitated.
Taking a deep breath, Ning Chu picked up his phone and opened a ticket-booking app.
Running away was the last resort. In a world like this, with his appearance, he was an easy target for all kinds of unsavory scenarios.
Without the protection of the protagonist’s plot armor, he could get harassed on the bus, hypnotized by a delivery guy, kidnapped off the street, or even attacked by some tentacled monster while hiding in his bedroom...
He vividly remembered that brief separation from Wen Yang at the amusement park when he felt malicious eyes on him from the shadows.
Yikes—maybe running away wasn’t such a good idea?
A shiver ran through him, and his impulsive thoughts quickly dissipated.
Maybe he was just being overly paranoid, seeing threats everywhere.
He was a bit of a coward...
Things weren’t dire enough to justify running away yet. Compared to the foreseeable dangers of staying in the dorm, running away seemed even less safe.
"Just wait a little longer..."
He was still a man, even if only just barely, and while Wen Yang was definitely probing his gender, he hadn’t shown any clear signs of romantic interest yet. Their friendship was still on the verge of capsizing, but not quite there.
Besides, the book clearly stated that his storyline would only really kick in once he had fully transformed into a woman.
"Buying a ticket? Are you planning to go home?"
Zhang Shaoqing's voice startled Ning Chu so much that he shuddered. He instinctively turned around to see Zhang Shaoqing peering over his shoulder.
"There's some stuff going on at home... I might need to go back at any moment."
He decided to plant a seed in his roommate’s mind, just in case he really did need to make a quick exit later on.
"Oh~" Zhang Shaoqing didn't seem too interested. Instead, he excitedly shoved his phone in Ning Chu’s face. "Hey, help me out with a discount. Spend forty and get five off!"
"......"
"This place is really good! I’m not kidding!"
"Shut up!" Wang Jie suddenly protested from the upper bunk. "I'm trying to sleep! Can’t you guys keep it down?!"
Zhang Shaoqing, thick-skinned as ever, laughed and called out, "It’s almost six o'clock! Time to get up and eat!"
"You guys are so noisy, you kept me half-asleep the whole time."
"Get up! If you keep sleeping, you’ll end up pulling another all-nighter tonight!"
Amid the lively chatter of his roommates, Ning Chu slumped over his desk, clutching his abdomen, lying still like a salted fish.
No rush—he could wait until he was fully transformed before making his escape.
