Chapter 392 Studies Complete
Kain had received 5 requests from his new research assistants, 3 of which were relatively simple.
The other 2 were virtually impossible if one didn't have the help of a System like Kain: Finding a new evolution form for Rivian's Leafwing Moth, and rediscovering the lost method of evolving Dravis' Raging Steel Boar.
Now Rivian's Leafwing Moth had evolved into a plant-attribute greater fairy. With Kain's help, he'd attempted to evolve into a Royal Fairy with 8 elements, but a certain amount of luck was needed to succeed and luck was not on his side.
The 3 other simpler requests were also completed by Kain, meaning that all the assistants worked happily and more eagerly than before.
Only Dravis' request was unfulfilled, however he did not rush Kain.
Honestly, the uncovering of a further evolution in the Silkworm evolutionary pathway would have been considered to be impossible by many a few weeks ago—but Kain made the impossible possible.
Therefore, although his request also seemingly appeared impossible, he had full faith in Kain and was confident that as long as he diligently did his job as an assistant, he'd also be able to take a leap forward in strength.
Moreover, with the increased motivation due to the fulfilled requests, Kain finally felt as though they'd grasped all the elementary knowledge of the Pathfinders.
It was now time to make that knowledge his own.
"Bea, let's begin," Kain said, his tone filled with enthusiasm.
Immediately, Bea extended her mental threads toward the unsuspecting assistants. The process was painless, though the assistants couldn't help but shiver as the faint, tickling sensation of Bea's influence brushed their consciousness. One by one, their memories of their recent readings were neatly compiled and transmitted to Kain.
The knowledge flowed into Kain's mind like a rushing stream.
From Rivian, he absorbed a wealth of knowledge about Ancient Verdarian and Eldrathic—languages spoken during the Verdant Epoch. Snippets of Rivian's research on the culture, artifacts, and spiritual techniques of the Verdaris City-State flashed before Kain's mind.
Elera's memories came next. It mostly included her study of the Celestial Ascension Period which revealed fascinating tidbits about the five founders of the Empire and their legendary spiritual contracts. Her grasp of Ancient Elvish added another layer to Kain's linguistic arsenal.
Dravis' knowledge focused on the Warring Periods. Moreover, an intermediate understanding of Myrthali, one of the most common languages of this period, entered Kain's mind.
Lastly, the two fourth-year assistants were tasked with learning all of the miscellaneous knowledge of the Pathfinders that didn't overlap with the specialties of the others, adding breadth to Kain's knowledge reserves.
Part of the reason that Kain had chosen this moment to finally read their memories was because of an unexpected announcement from the Eclipse Order.
His first excursion opportunity had finally arrived. After reporting to the order that his studies were "completed," using the shortcuts provided by Bea's mental abilities, Kain was included in the possible candidates for what has been rumoured to be a unique opportunity that would extend to all members of the department under 6-stars.
"This is cutting it close," Kain muttered, leaning back in his chair. "If I hadn't decided to access their memories today, I might have missed this entirely."
Kain sighed, rubbing his temples as the large influx of knowledge showed signs of causing a headache. His mind felt like an overstuffed library, shelves crammed with information, but it was a worthwhile price to pay.
It would take a few days to make the knowledge completely his own, but by the time they arrived at the mission location, it should be fully digested by him.
Finally, the flow of knowledge ended, showing that the rest of the knowledge in their minds wasn't considered useful to him by Bea.
He glanced at his assistants, who seemed to be working but if one glanced at their eyes they would see that they were blank. However, after Bea released her control they seemed to quickly snap back into focus, unaware that their minds had just been invaded.
"Keep at it," he said to them, his tone unexpectedly warm. "You're doing well."
They looked up, startled but pleased, before returning to their tasks with renewed vigour.
However, there was no more time to continue processing the new information. A notification from the Eclipse Order pinged on his communication device. It was time for him to leave.
Kain headed to the college's teleportation array, where Serena was already waiting. Her silver hair caught the light of the array's runes that had already begun to light up. Clearly Kain arrived just in time.
"You're cutting it close," she remarked, glancing at him.
"Still made it," Kain replied casually.
The array began to hum as the runes activated, glowing faintly before intensifying into a bright circle of light. Serena stepped onto the platform first, and Kain followed.
The journey was disorienting, as teleportation often was—a brief moment of weightlessness, followed by a rush of sensation as they reappeared in the headquarters of the Eclipse Order and headed towards the location indicated on their notification.
The room they arrived at was massive, its vaulted ceilings supported by dark stone pillars etched with glowing sigils. Hundreds of people were already there, many were grouped in clusters defined by their department uniforms.
However, although everyone was from a different department, they all had one thing in common: none of them had exceeded 6-stars, and no one had contracts of indigo-grade or higher.
An amplified voice echoed through the hall, cutting through the murmurs. "Attention!"
Experience more on empire
The crowd stilled as a figure in a dark military uniform stepped onto a raised platform at the front of the room. His voice carried an air of authority.
"For this mission, the situation and danger level on the other side remain unknown. That is why individuals from all six departments will be chosen. Ten from each department will be selected to ensure a balance of skills."
A murmur rippled through the crowd. The uncertainty of the mission's nature and danger level was unsettling to many, but those who could join the Eclipse Order weren't easily frightened.
"The selection process will begin shortly," the speaker continued. "Only those selected will be briefed on the mission details. Prepare yourselves."
This was not the first mission Kain had anticipated upon completing his "studies."
"Well," Kain muttered, cracking a small grin to ease his nerves, "this just got interesting."
