Chapter 420 - 53: Fake Manor
Chapter 420 - 53: Fake Manor
The car traveled in silence, for hours.
The distance from Laute Manor to the academy was four hours, even with this car, which could reach pretty high speeds.
But where we were going was not the main manor but a fake one, a trap.
So, aside from four hours, we traveled for almost five hours, even though we were going in the wrong direction, as a diversion.
And in those five hours, A-18 got all the information she could from me. Everything Aiden said, what his plan probably was... everything as far as I knew.
And the conclusion she came up with was simple.
"He’s overconfident."
And I also thought that was the case.
Because of his achievements, he thought he was... stronger than he actually was, or that the world was weaker than it actually was.
He acted like he was the main character of this world, stupidly.
I thought he’d come to his senses after his girlfriend died, but it only got worse.
I took a deep breath and looked back out of the corner of my eye.

The road was empty.
No one was following us.
But, of course, that wasn’t true.
Just because we couldn’t see them didn’t mean they weren’t there.
So we kept going. Toward the end of the fifth hour, just a few minutes into the sixth hour, the car turned right at the junction that divided the road into two. Then it made another right and drove into the forest, which covered quite a large area.
But it did not follow the road.
After a few minutes on the road through the forest, the car suddenly turned left, went off the road and went straight into the forest through the trees.
The car shook and bounced many times because of the rough ground. The ride, which had been quite comfortable, suddenly became rather uncomfortable... but I didn’t make a sound. I couldn’t make one anyway.
So, after about five minutes... the trees suddenly opened up. The car came out into a huge clearing where there were almost no trees.
And in the center of this clearing... stood a fairly large manor house.
It wasn’t the main manor, though. The main one was... many times bigger than this one. And yet the building in front of us lived up to the name ’manor’.
Just like in the main manor, we were checked by fake guards, or real guards... who knows, before entering inside.
And then the door to the garden of the manor opened wide.
And... it was right in front of my eyes.
No, not the fake manor.
A small group of very familiar faces.
First, there were two women who looked like twins. They both had sky-blue eyes and long silver hair. Their hands behind their backs, their eyes on the car.
They were my cousins. Twin daughters of my grandfather’s long-dead sister.
But they weren’t the important thing.
The important thing... was the person standing in front of them. His hands were on the cane he held in front of him, and his emerald green eyes were as sharp and cold as ever. His wrinkles... seemed to have increased a little for some reason. His silver hair made tiny movements in the breeze and his pointed ears were exposed.
He was wearing trousers in the same color as his hair, and a black shirt with a silver buttoned vest.
A-18 pulled the car over, then got out without looking at me. I did the same, but made sure to stay behind her.
A-18 approached the trio, and when she got in front of the front figure, she got down on one knee and bowed. And... I did the same once again.
"There were three cars and two helicopters following us, sir."
The person she bowed to, my grandfather, Rian Laute, didn’t even look at her. He turned his emerald green eyes on me and spoke in his deep, firm voice.
"We will talk about your failure later."
I didn’t answer, I couldn’t. Because the moment I opened my mouth... it would be me who would be hurt as he didn’t give me permission to speak.
He took his eyes off me and turned them toward the gate, which was still wide open.
"But it is not that bad of a failure."
Immediately after his words, I felt all the mana in the atmosphere ripple for a moment. A-18 got up from her knees and walked quickly behind my grandfather. And I followed her.
Suddenly, the ripple intensified, and slowly, the ’empty’ scene in front of us blurred and blended together. Then, all this blurring and rippling dissipated and quickly disappeared.
There was no longer an ’emptiness’ in front of us, and the manor was not so quiet...
An intense noise filled my ears. The grass on the ground suddenly stirred, and the grass was violently tossed from side to side as if a strong wind was pushing it from side to side.
One of the two helicopters A-18 had mentioned was revealed now. It was flying quite low, looking like it was going to land in the garden. The other was way too high up.
Just below them were three black cars, standing where they were, which looked like they had entered the garden a long time ago. The occupants had already gotten out, a total of ten people were looking at where we were with cold expressions.
But they were certainly not the ones attracting attention.
Rather, it was the helicopter flying quite low.
Because there was someone in the open door of the helicopter, a huge person.
His blood-red eyes were on us, his lips curled upward. He was clinging to the roof of the helicopter with one hand and with the other he was gripping a big greatsword over his shoulder.
He didn’t stay where he was for long, though. As he pulled the sword from his shoulder, he jumped down, and the helicopter that was carrying him suddenly rose into the air as the weight lifted from it.
As soon as his feet touched the ground, a tiny shockwave rippled through the air, and the earth around him gave a slight compression and sank. But he ignored it, straightening up as the tip of his greatsword brushed against the earth, his eyes fixed on a single figure as he widened the smile on his face.
"Rian Laute!"
His voice boomed, as if shaking the entire manor.
He raised his sword from the ground and pointed it at us.
No, he pointed it at the only person he saw as his target.
"It’s been twenty-three years, hasn’t it?"
My grandfather narrowed his eyes slightly, his hands on his cane contracted slightly, ready to move at any moment.
"You know what happened twenty-three years ago... and you still come alone, Leonard Quie, after the defeat of your father and the other three, not having learned your lesson?"
His expression was flat, the look in his eyes never changing.
It was as if he didn’t even see the person in front of him as a threat.
"I expected more from Cevilian."
Leonard Quie did not respond to this provocation, his smile widened as he replied in the same tone as before.
"The kingdom knows nothing of this, old man. I’m just here to take your life for the arm your son took from my father. Pretty fair, if you ask me."
I couldn’t help but be surprised at what I heard.
What...? Didn’t the whole kingdom come here?
The only enemy was... Leonard Quie?
It was... way too stupid.
It couldn’t be real, right?
This was just, simply... foolish.
Leonard Quie was not weak, he was perhaps one of the most powerful men in the whole kingdom.
But there was a big difference between him and Rian Laute.
"What a stupidity..."
For the first time, traces of an emotion appeared on my grandfather’s face.
It was disgust.
At his words, the twin nephews standing on either side of him suddenly disappeared. And at the same time, the ten people waiting behind Leonard Quie.
But they didn’t choose the space between Leonard Quie and Rian Laute as the place to collide with each other. Rather, they moved as far away from them as possible... as if they didn’t want to get in their way.
At the same moment as them, A-18 put her hand on my shoulder. The next second, I found myself on a balcony of the fake manor, far away from Leonard Quie and my grandfather.
"Watch, see for yourself."
I didn’t know why we didn’t go straight to a safe place or what was her purpose...
But I didn’t complain, I kept my eyes fixed on the two standing quite far away.
In the next moment... the autumn winds that could be felt throughout the kingdom suddenly stopped, everything became still.
The clouds that enveloped the sky seemed to speed up. Whereas before they were all moving in a certain direction... they slowly began to pull toward a single point.
All the mana in the atmosphere began to tremble and fluctuate as if an earthquake was happening... it all gradually pulled toward my grandfather... An indication of the power he had.
After that, though… I suddenly felt a pressure from where they were that literally took my breath away.
A pressure that didn’t come from my grandfather.
But from Leonard Quie.
A faint reddish glow surrounded his body. The smile on his face widened, then he raised his sword slightly... and disappeared.
He appeared in front of my grandfather and drew his sword down with great force.
The fight had begun.
The whole atmosphere collapsed on them as if a vacuum had been created where they were, the ground literally crunched beneath their feet. A strong wind blew in my face so hard that my hair and necklace were blown backward. If it hadn’t been for A-18... maybe I would have been blown away too.
But Leonard Quie’s sword didn’t even reach my grandfather.
There was a barrier between him and his face. A very dense barrier that had no color, but was clearly visible in its translucent appearance.
Then the barrier suddenly expanded towards Leonard Quie, forcing him to retreat.
But not only that, colorless spears also appeared behind him, forcing him to squeeze between these two.
Leonard swung his sword around quickly and forcefully as the red glow surrounding him was suddenly drawn to his sword and intensified.
Both the barrier and the spears that had come so close to reaching him were shattered by his sword as he broke free. Cracks appeared in the ground beneath his feet as his eyes sharpened, and the whole area was bathed in crimson light as he brought his sword into a cross grip in slow motion.
His attack was not fast, nor did it seem to have excessive force. But when he swung his sword at the diagonal angle it had... all sound in the area disappeared and a dazzling light colored everything red.

A few seconds later, when the dust cloud dissipated, the scene was... simple but frightening.
My grandfather hadn’t even moved from where he was, but there were several barriers in front of him, which had disintegrated into pieces. There was a huge, and as huge as it was deep, gash in the ground leading up to the first layer of his barrier.
I couldn’t help swallowing. The only thing that went through my mind as I looked at the two of them was... what frightening beings they both were.
There was someone more frightening though, someone who hadn’t shown anything yet... someone who probably wasn’t even taking this fight that seriously.
Rian Laute.
And...
"You are much stronger than the leaders of twenty-three years ago."
Despite the distance between us, his voice echoed and even reached me. Maybe A-18 was doing it on purpose, maybe his voice really came all the way here... but that wasn’t important.
"But not enough to win a fight against me."
His emerald green eyes lit up like a flashlight, and then even the light around them refracted and rippled due to the intensity of the mana he used.
Everything blurred as if the clouds in the sky and the ground were merging into each other.
But then, these blurs took shape. They condensed and condensed until they reached such a point that... the ’mana’, which normally appears to be translucent, took on a white color.
And after that, there were dozens of spears in the sky... all with a clear target.
