Chapter 297: About Time
Clearly, the painting was about the incident that happened that night. Jiang Cheng narrowed his eyes. In other words, the little beggar was also by the lake that night. Plus, he witnessed something important, or else he wouldn’t come to find them… or rather, come to find Fatty. He didn’t want to alert the others.
“The boy sure is brave.” Fatty glanced at the window. He said with worry as if he could see the boy through the wall, “Isn’t he afraid that Young Master Huang might discover him and kill him? That is a ghost!”
Xia Meng stood up and picked up the candle on the table. She placed the leaf on the ground. With the candlelight, she studied it closer. She responded, “That might not be true.”
Fatty was startled, “What do you mean?”
“I mean… Young Master Huang might not be a ghost.” Xia Meng didn’t even raise her head, “He might be human.”
Fatty instantly turned to the Doctor. He remembered the Doctor had said something similar, but he had said it before the other travellers. He thought the Doctor was scamming everyone again, so he didn’t pay much attention to it. However, now that Xia Meng mentioned it again, there might be a kernel of truth to it.
“Before this, we run on the assumption that Young Master Huang is a ghost. However, the basis for that is that he acts weird. We don’t have concrete evidence.” Jiang Cheng looked at Fatty, “We thought he was floating on the water to perform, but from the looks of things, there might be an elevated island in the middle of the lake. Due to the geography, we didn’t notice it.
“If we have a boat, we can do the same thing he did.” Jiang Cheng picked up the leaf and shook it, “If this drawing is not a trap, I think we can confirm that Young Master Huang is human. Even though he is human, something must have happened to him to turn him into his current form.”
“Love.” Xia Meng sighed, “His lover died, or rather, his lover was killed. He couldn’t get over it and became like this.”
Fatty thought about it and agreed with them. To him, ghosts were supernatural entities. Could three ghosts gather together and row the boat back after the killings? That was… unlikely. Just the thought of it made him want to laugh. The moon outside was clear. Fatty stood up and looked around. He didn’t notice anything special. It looked like the beggar had left.
After a long day, everyone was very tired. Xia Meng went to sleep after studying the leaf a few more times. Soon, her breathing became even. Fatty leaned towards the Doctor and stared at the drawing. He whispered, “Doctor, what exactly do you see?”
Jiang Cheng looked up at Fatty. Fatty licked his lips and said embarrassedly, “Doctor, don’t be surprised. After all, we’ve spent some time together. It’s normal for me to notice things other people cannot. You must have spotted something,” Fatty looked at him with glowing eyes, “But you didn’t say anything.”
Jiang Cheng gave Fatty a side-eye. Then, he turned to glance at Xia Meng, who was pretending to be asleep. His lips twitched. Fatty understood the Doctor.
Jiang Cheng uttered two sentences. The first was, “It’s about time.” This was targeted at Xia Meng. Before this, Jiang Cheng had already filled Fatty in about Xia Meng and the forces behind her so that he could have some basic understanding of them. The Doctor was probably about to confront her.
However, the thing that grabbed Fatty’s attention was the Doctor’s second sentence, “I know… what the crop is.”
The latter half of the hint was, “The half-filled crop can cure the feeling of sadness.” The Doctor found it. Fatty became excited. This mission gave him a different feeling from the other missions. Perhaps it was the difference in the setting. Every second he spent there was uncomfortable.
Plus, the ghosts and players in this mission were special. Even someone like the Doctor had to distract the ghost to survive. If this continued, they may perish. Plus, Xia Meng was unreliable…
Fatty’s face was red from excitement. Just as he was about to ask the Doctor more about the crop, he realised the way the Doctor looked at him had changed.
“Fatty.” Jiang Cheng patted his shoulders and said consolingly, “I’m sorry for the suffering you will have to go through.”
Fatty, “???”
…
Early the next morning, Jiang Cheng was woken up by the noises outside. He turned over happily and assumed many comfortable poses. This caused Xia Meng who was standing beside the window to frown.
After realising Xia Meng was looking at him, Jiang Cheng thought about it and narrowed his eyes. Then, his butt, which was under the blanket, slowly rose to become a mound.
Xia Meng instantly turned away to stop encouraging this pervert. He was sick. She knew that when they did the Little Ravine Village mission.
His ruthlessness and cavalier attitude showed that he grew up without love. He might be attacked when he was a child. This led to his perverted personality.
To deal with the nightmare, she studied a lot of psychology. She understood that childhood upbringing was instrumental in shaping a person’s future.
Most deranged adults were treated violently by their families when they were young. The constant negative stimulus numbed their hearts. Over time, they became aloof and twisted. They treated others and themselves in the same way. That was the scariest thing about them. The man before her was the prime example.
After he tasted the bowl of human blood, his expression didn’t even change. He even finished the whole bowl. If she remembered correctly, he even looked like he enjoyed it.
The scariest thing was… Xia Meng tightened her fingers. He seemed to have seen through her arrangements. How was that possible?
But if he didn’t, why would he say those things?
“I’ve given you a chance,” Jiang Cheng’s warning echoed in her mind, “Don’t forget that.”
Xia Meng shivered uncontrollably.
