Chapter 230 Child of Shadows (10)
Chapter 230 Child of Shadows (10)
"Where? Hm... hard to tell. It was definitely above the clouds; you were just one black dot of shadows," Elizabeth giggled.
"And all around you, there were a lot of golden-haired people swarming you without giving you air to breathe."
'That... has not happened before.' Kevin tried his best to recall the memories of his past life, but alas, he could not remember anything of the sort.
The closest thing that plagued his mind was his time in Hell, shortly before he died.
He was enveloped by a bunch of demons constantly. However, none of them had golden hair—or any hair, for that matter—they were all bald, horned demons.
'Yeah... I got nothing.' Kevin inwardly sighed before placing his attention back on her explanation.
"A white world, then it turned dark. It kept rotating between darkness and light with each attack you dished out. It looked pretty commendable, if I do say so myself."
"However... the visions do not end at that. There are many more—most of which don't even include you," Elizabeth stated.
"What are those visions?" He pushed for answers, since it was quite likely they were the key to them getting out of this place.
"It seemed like I was riding on top of a massive winged horse... multiple times, as well. However, after God knows how many visions, they finally ceased. That's also around the same time I met you."
Kevin was momentarily puzzled, unsure if she did not word her statement properly, or if he was simply mishearing things.
Therefore, he interjected.
"Wait a moment. What do you mean, met me? In this place, right?"
He was met with a shake of the head.
"No... I had these visions ever since childhood; only recently have they started to appear so frequently. It was pretty alarming, to be honest." Elizabeth let out a soft laugh, but he continued pushing for answers.
"Elizabeth, define recently. How recently?"
She tilted her head in response, putting a single finger up to her chin, seemingly thinking.
"Hmm... The start of the academy seemed to be when it grew more frequent. After I came back home and slept, I had an especially prolonged vision."
Kevin's brows furrowed at her words.
From his perspective—and any other logical perspective—all of these incidents and happenings seemed to somehow trace back to the academy.
That might not have seemed strange at first, but there was one person in particular who had been nothing but an anomaly ever since Kevin first met them.
Michael.
It was supposed to be his previous friend, the same one he had fought with and nearly died with multiple times, and yet, he was replaced by a complete stranger—one who seemed completely ruthless in his dealings.
At the same time, this Michael was much stronger than the previous one; it was not even comparable.
Neither battle experience nor anything of the like could bridge that gap.
At the end of his conclusion, Kevin could not help but note down in his mind that this Michael, who he had talked to and acted friendly with, was nothing but an impostor.
An impostor who stole his friend's identity, perhaps even a demon sent directly from Hell to torment him further—since, after all, it seemed like they were aware of his regression somehow.
That really put into perspective how nothing he had known in the past could live up to what was happening, and aside from revenge, it was likely about time he dropped this knowledge gimmick.
Because in the end, what good was knowledge you can't use?
"Elizabeth, I want you to think carefully about this question I am going to ask, okay?" he suddenly stated, earning a puzzled look from her.
"Shoot."
Nodding, Kevin immediately tried to make her remember some kind of pattern.
"Think—was there anyone in the center of all these visions? Aside from me, of course."
"Now that you mention it... there were a few buff dudes in my visions training their swo—"
"Stop," Kevin quickly interjected with a sigh. "Those are dreams, Elizabeth. Focus on the visions instead, please?"
Noticing his practically begging tone, she shrugged and closed her eyes for a moment.
And as she did so, Kevin finally took notice of the mana she was emitting—and by no means was it weak.
Comparing it to when she had first arrived was like night and day; similarly to his strength improvements, she went through something as well.
"I think I got it!" she suddenly shouted, startling him.
Nonetheless, he eagerly asked, "What is it?"
Elizabeth put on a smirk as she sat on the ground, gesturing for him to do the same.
Finally, once they both sat down, she began drawing something in the snow, using her finger like a blade to carve out letters that seemed embedded into the stone right below the snow.
After several minutes of patiently waiting for her to finish, Kevin decided to try piecing together the puzzle her artistic skills created.
It almost seemed like a toddler had drawn whatever that thing in the snow was, but alas—her stupid side was pretty attractive.
Putting those thoughts aside, he stared at the ground, trying to even envelop his mana into the drawing.
However, as he did that, Elizabeth suddenly bonked him over the head with her palm, causing him to feel dazed for just a moment.
"What was that for?" He rubbed his head, sending a small glare toward her.
"You asked me to recall all that I could, and now you are messing with my drawing. What are you, stupid?" Elizabeth said with a bit of playful disbelief in her tone.
"I will finish the drawing soon, so just sit back like a princess and wait."
'...A princess.' Kevin couldn't help but nearly choke upon hearing the new nickname she had come up with for him.
If she went around calling him princess in public, his image would most certainly become tarnished.
And to put salt on the wounds, he had no way of getting back at her—since deep down, he did not want to make her angry and leave him again.
Just like in the past, a single conflict was what led to the two of them being separated. And before Kevin knew it, she had died.
Michael had broken the news to him personally as he dragged her dismembered body back to Kevin, tears in his eyes as he enveloped her in the golden light of healing.
Alas, Michael was not a god; he couldn't bring back the dead even if he wanted to.
'I should stop...' Kevin ruffled his own hair before finally taking a glance at Elizabeth, who, for some reason, was staring directly into his eyes while pointing with her chin toward the ground.
"It's done, princess. Check it out."
