Chapter 203 Arrest
Chapter 203 Arrest
As Lucas left the study with a happy Melissa beside him, he met Laura outside.
The princess of the Mertens family gave him a cold look before proceeding to ignore him. However, when she noticed how Melissa seemed scared of her, she was a bit shook.
"How are you?"
Laura smiled at her as she tried to strike a conversation. But Melissa remained quiet and hid behind Lucas.
"I'm sorry for the other day. I really am. It's not my fault." Laura hurriedly apologized, but Melissa was still fearful of her.
Laura sighed and just as she was about to attempt something else, Lucas had already walked past her with Melissa by his side.
"You..."
Laura gritted her teeth but Lucas still ignored her. Regardless of her feelings though, she still followed suit without causing a scene since her father had ordered her to do so.
A few minutes later, Lucas was finally out of the mansion using the scooters from before. From here on, Lucas and Melissa would have to take the special shuttles for movement in the estate, then arrive at the main gate. There, the hover car that brought them over from the light-rail train station waited.
Just as Lucas and Melissa walked towards the shuttle, he abruptly lifted his head to the sky. The robot as well as Laura turned their attention in the same direction, both with a frown on their faces.
A few hover cars flew over and came towards the group. There were at least four of them, with the one in front being a box more luxurious compared to the other two. Even without being a member of the family, Lucas had a feeling that something strange was about to occur.
"Who dares to be so disrespectful on Mertens grounds?!" Laura shouted while giving off an arrogant air.
The Mertens family has a special rule in the estate. First, only the private vehicles of the clan members could be operated in the estate. If a member had three vehicles, only one would be granted this right. Apart from that, the only exception was the designated movement shuttles. For this reason, Laura was incensed at the new arrivals. This was the home of a top four family; even the other three top families would abide by their rules on this ground.
As the hover cars landed, the group could easily identify the features on them. There was a sigil by the side of each vehicle. Apart from Melissa, the others found it to be very familiar. The vehicles were from the Baylands City Patrol Corps.
'What is the Patrol Corps doing here?' Both Lucas and Lucas thought.
Lucas began to have a bad feeling about things, but it wasn't like he could dip and run. As such, he remained calm and wanted to understand the situation properly.
Once the hover cars landed, a few agents in the Baylands City Patrol Corps uniform stepped out of the vehicles. From each vehicle, at least five men came down, totalling twenty agents from the four hover cars. Ten of the agents immediately pointed their guns at Lucas right after they had settled down, while eight of them were on alert.
"Lucas Saunters, remain still and take no further action. You are under arrest."
The man in the lead, who appeared to be in his fifties, gave off an aura of power and confidence as he stared at Lucas in the eyes and gave out the proclamation. Beside him was the last member of the group, a young man who seemed to be the old man's assistant.
"Under arrest? For what?" Laura said right before Lucas could even respond.
Although she didn't like him, Lucas was a guest of their family. Apart from that, the Baylands City Patrol Corps had disobeyed the rules of the Mertens family and barged right in. Even if they wanted to arrest Lucas and ensure he didn't escape, they could have surrounded the estate instead. While that would have still been perceived as rude, it was less offensive than forcing their way in.
"Little miss, please stay out of this." The old man said.
"What do you mean 'stay out of this'? This is the Mertens family estate. How can I stay out of this?" Laura yelled.
The old man ignored her and signalled for his men to seize Lucas instead.
Laura moved to block them, which forced the old man to finally speak.
"Anyone who interferes with the matters of internal security would be treated as an aide to the suspect, and trialled for obstructing justice."
Seeing how serious the man was, Laura froze and hesitated.
That short moment of hesitation was enough for the agents to get past her and arrive beside Lucas and Melissa.
"May I ask what my crime is?" Lucas finally spoke up.
"You know it better than we do." The old man nonchalantly answered him.
If it were before, Lucas wouldn't understand why the Patrol Corps got involved. But after his conversation with Russell Mertens, he could roughly guess the reason why.
"At least let her go. She's a little girl and shouldn't get caught up in this."
The old man didn't reply to Lucas. On the contrary, his focus wasn't even on him as he stared at the gate of the Mertens family main house with furrowed brows.
In the next second, the old man made his way towards the building. Laura wanted to stop him but paused and let him go.
Meanwhile, Lucas was beginning to get incensed because his question had yet to be answered. Just as he was about to ask again, the old man turned back and said.
"What are you guys doing?"
He was talking to the agents that had arrived alongside him. After Lucas' question, they had paused their actions as they too were unsure as to whether they had to arrest the little girl as well.
"She's a hybrid and related to the suspect as well. Chances are that she's a valuable connection to the terrorist, or she may even be knowledgeable about a few details. Arrest her as well." The old man said coldly before turning his back on the group.
Lucas widened his eyes in shock and even Laura couldn't believe what she had heard. The duo couldn't even get a word out as the old man ignored them and stepped into the building.
With the command given, the ten agents immediately moved to arrest both Lucas and Melissa.
"You have to be shitting me!" Lucas roared.
There was no way he would sit back and let Melissa get dragged into this nonsense. To Lucas, Melissa was almost like a daughter. Not only was this because she reminded him of his last disciple, but the experiences they had shared together had made Lucas attached to her. In Melissa, he could see a bit of his younger self, which made Lucas care for her very dearly.
"Stay down and don't make a move!" One of the agents barked as he aimed his gun at Lucas.
"Stop delaying and hurry." The young man who has stood beside the old man earlier said.
He was aware that their actions would attract the ire of the Mertens family, which was why they had brought a lot of men for this operation. But even then, it was best to avoid any sort of confrontation by all means, which meant to carry out the arrest as quickly as possible.
Although the young man didn't understand why his superior had gone into the building, he wasn't worried about the man. Whether it was in terms of skill or authoritative power, it would be difficult for the Mertens family to do anything to him. Rather, they who were carrying out the operation faced the greatest risk
The Mertens family would not attack them, after all, they were members of a public security agency carrying out official matters. However, this didn't mean that the Mertens couldn't delay them or interfere with the operation.
"Take them both and leave right away." The young man gave an order.
The ten agents who surrounded Lucas and Melissa suddenly turned fierce as they grabbed the two forcefully.
"You dare!" Lucas' eyes bulged as he grabbed the closest agent to him and tossed him away.
The man was only at the first level, and to Lucas, that was no different from an average citizen.
"He's resisting arrest." One of them shouted.
The young man frowned and prepared to step in. He was a captain of the Baylands City Patrol Corps' Central Prefecture district branch. Being a captain rank agent, his stellar refinement was at the fifth level of the Apertures Opening stage. Not many individuals could compare to him, especially at this time where the Baylands City Patrol Corps had made an unexpected move.
"Where do you think you're going?" Laura blocked off the captain.
"Stay out of this." The captain frowned.
"You guys still haven't offered an explanation to my Mertens family over this incident. There's no way I can sit back and watch us being bullied." Laura coldly replied as she shook her hands a bit.
The twin bracelets Laura wore on both wrists suddenly flashed as an armour expanded out from them and covered her.
"Are you really going to interfere with the operations of the Patrol Corps? You can be charged for obstructing justice?" The captain threatened her.
No matter what, the person before him was the precious daughter of the family head of a too four family. Even his identity as a captain of the Baylands City Patrol Corps won't be enough to save him if she got hurt. As such, he was unwilling to face her in battle. However, if he didn't, no one else here could hold her back.
"Obstructing justice? Do you think I don't know what's going on here?" Laura scoffed.
"I've been meaning to see for myself just how strong the famous captain of the Central Prefecture district is."
Seeing that she wasn't going to give up, the captain sighed.
"Coincidentally, I've been wanting to know how far you've gotten."
A vestige immediately appeared in the captain's hand as his energy began to rise, until it paused at the peak of the fifth level.
Today was destined to not be a peaceful day in the Mertens family estate.
