Chapter 122 Intermission: Childhood of Mari and Petra
Chapter 122 Intermission: Childhood of Mari and Petra
Now, you might be wondering how I or Mari even managed to obtain them, well, it's a convenient but good enough reason. My imagination. My imagination and skill was the only thing that limited me, so essentially, in this world of white, I had infinite stats, allowing me to pull off any feat imaginable.
Mari had decent imagination, but after Uranus, she was completely unable to follow my movements due to her lack of skill. She was not a dagger user at all, but even then, if she was, the gap between Uranus and Saturn was so wide that I doubt she would even have a chance at pulling Saturn off.
Thankfully, I still retained most of my skill from my previous life, so pulling these moves off with infinite stats was incredibly easy… until Mercury. Mercury was a skill that, to say the least, sacrificed everything that I have, including part of my soul. For some reason, I was still able to create it due to the strange properties of this white abyss, but it still took incredibly long to pull off.
"How long have we been in here? A couple of days?" Mari asked, not expecting my answer.
"About a week, I'd say."
"WHAT THE FUCK!? What about our testing!?" Mari immediately shot up, but I stayed relaxed as my eyes drifted over to her face. She was troubled, obviously, but it wasn't long before a tick echoed in my mind.
Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick… Tick…
Over and over, it echoed in my mind continuously until the final one rang. No longer did the ticking echo in my head as Mari collapsed back onto the ground right next to me. She was too exhausted to try and interrogate me any further.
"Tch… I hope you know what you're doing. I'm not losing my chance at climbing the ranks because of this stupid training…"
"Hey, it isn't stupid," I smiled, turning my head to the girl whose black hair sprawled out across the ground. "You learned a really good dagger. It will help you later on as long as you keep practicing it and keeping up with your training. Trust me, it will really help… and that's about time."
"What's about time-"
FWOOSH
As our body fell through the invisible white floor beneath us, my vision went black, and before I knew it, I was sitting straight up, gasping for air with Mari doing the same right next to me. It was approximately the same time as when we were sucked into the orb of light.
"Oh, man… I'm wide awake. Also, the exhaustion I had before is completely gone like magic," Mari smirked, looking down at her hands which flexed back and forth with ease. And she was right, all the depletion we had experienced in the white void was completely gone. It was as if a mystical being had eradicated it from our very soul. In fact, I felt even better than when I entered that place.
"I feel good…" I muttered, flexing my hands as well. I was debating whether I should try and get some more sleep so I wouldn't be tired during the test, but before I knew it, I snuck out of the dorms with Mari. We didn't do much besides lay on the massive and now empty field within the campus of the school. Nobody was here besides us.
The chirping of crickets echoed across the vast open space. The rustling of small critters like rabbits and even a few mice had Mari on high alert as she hated them. But, the longer we lay there, the slower our minds began to race. We began to calm down from the strange high we had just experienced, and for a cool hour, we didn't say anything. There was pure and utter silence between us… until Mari shattered it with a strange comment.
"Hey, I don't know what to do with my life."
"Okay… uhhhhh… what do you want me to say?"
"Nothing, just… I don't know what to do. After I finish this academy, what do I become? An adventurer? That path isn't really what I want to follow… especially after seeing Jake. He's somebody who truly wants to become an adventurer, but I don't want to become somebody like him. I don't look up to him."
"That's fine, do what you want," I responded, yet Mari didn't say anything back. There was another long period of silence before I asked a question I had been curious about lately. "Hey, what were you like before coming to the orphanage… or do you maybe not remember?"
The girl turned her head towards me as I stared up into the glistening stars above. I wasn't looking at her, but I could feel, smell, taste, and especially hear the sorrow in her voice. It caused her words to quiver as they escaped from her lips, a wispy breath of air escaping without her permission each time she spoke.
"My sister and I… well, no, my sister has always been the outcast in our family. We haven't told you yet, but our last name is Wixx."
I turned towards her, my eyes widening as her lips proceeded to quiver. Clearly, I had brought up unwanted memories that she seemingly wanted to forget. But, my curiosity got the better of me, suppressing the empathic words that were supposed to slide from my mouth.
The Wixx family… that's the same family as the boss? Wasn't their inherent color black? Then is her sister some kind of bastard child?
"As I'm sure you know, since our family is quite popular when it comes to mysteries, our family's inherent color is black. We have black hair and black eyes, and, well, we mostly wore black clothing… unsurprisingly. But besides that, our skin color was the only thing that varied. Normally, the genes of the Wixx family are quite powerful, overpowering pretty much every other gene that had to do with black hair and black eyes… I don't know how it does that, but it does. But then, occasionally, when a family member marries outside of the family, a common occurrence, there is a rare moment where one of these phenotypic features is not black."
"And that's what happened with your sister? With Petra?"
"Yeah… and our mother has white hair, which is completely fine since she was never born into the family. Now, since Petra acquired not only white hair but somehow white eyes as well, despite our mother having green eyes, she was shunned from the family. No, my dad, my mother, and my sister were shunned… all except for me since I had black hair and black eyes. My father delivered a baby with white hair and white eyes, my mother birthed a baby with white hair and white eyes, and my sister… she was that demon child." Mari's eyes began to water, and soon tears began to leak.
"I'm sorry… that's a stupid rule."
"I'm well aware it's a stupid rule. A-Anyways…" Mari sniffed, cleaning up the mucus dripping from her nostrils and wiping the tears from her face. "Ummm… oh yeah, so since my parents were shunned from the Wixx family, they blamed everything on my sister. They weren't the nicest of parents before, but they never dared to touch us until they had been shunned to the point of no return. There was a point where we had to move from our estate and into a cramped apartment where my mother and father would beat my sister. And it wasn't just once a week when their anger had a hitting peak, but every… single… day. Every single day!" Mari shouted, a wave of anger flashing through her expression, only for it to be negated by sadness, which soon overtook every other emotion, starting to swell.
"Is that how her core broke?"
"Yeah… and it was because my stupid father lashed out way too hard and hit her with a belt infused with magic. If it wasn't for my medical attention, she would have died right then and there."
"That's fucking brutal…"
"I'm well aware of that…. And so, I took her and ran away after that. Our parents didn't even try to find us, as I'm sure they just assumed we were dead. Also, I'm pretty sure they didn't care. They didn't really care about me either, but Petra drew the short end of the stick… so yeah. And then, Amelia found us, and we were safe. She gave us some medicine and even got us to get vaccines which we had been neglected of… and now we're here."
"If you want, I can tell you my childhood, although it isn't very different from yours…." I asked, but she just shook her head from side to side. And after she wiped a few more tears from her face, I felt her lightly hug me from the side and dig her face into my neck before peacefully falling asleep. "*sigh*... I'm not good at this…"
