Chapter 366 Quard's Misery

Chapter 366 Quard's Misery

"What is happening... what am I doing here..."

Inside the City of Hope, an entourage of more than a dozen carriages were being pulled by horse-type magic beasts. All the civilians who see these carriages cannot help but sneer.

Some of them even grabbed stones of fruits to throw into the carriages while cursing the people inside.

These carriages were pulling metal cages inside of which were mages who committed various crimes. Petty or small crimes are not enough to warrant them this fate. All of these criminals' sins are more than enough for them to be executed.

They are murderers, psychopaths, rapists, arsonists, traitors, and many more vile terms. They are the scum of the society that needs to be purged for the greater good.

Inside one of these carriages, a young man sat in a daze. His eyes looked absentminded as he sat inside the cage.

His mind cannot comprehend what was happening and only when one of the stones that the civilians threw hit him in the head did his soul return to his body.

As soon as he somewhat recovered, the young man could not help but grit his teeth in anger.

"Rezen!! " he said through gritted teeth. His jaws were clenched tightly, and his knuckles turned white. His whole body, even his soul, was trembling with fury.

He, a Young Master, destined for greatness was actually reduced to a criminal? A criminal whose fate is to serve in the war until his death.

Earlier, he was too shocked by the fast development. He was previously a mighty genius but he suddenly fell from grace in just a single night.

All of this is because of that barbarian!

"W-who?! Who the hell threw a stone at me?!" Quard furiously shouted as he stared at the crowd.

Normally, with his status and family's strength, these people wouldn't even dare say one bad word to him much less throw a stone at him.

"What?! This bastard is still arrogant!"

"Look at how young he is but he's already a vile criminal!"

"Serves him right! I heard that bastard is from the Richard Family, they have always been arrogant and domineering!"

"Heh... they can only act domineering in front of us but look at one of their descendants. Who knows if he can even survive a week?"

"I hope he doesn't! Arrogant nobles like him are what I hate the most. Serves him right!"

The people spat at Quard which made him even furious. He, Quard Richard, a genius Young Master of the Richard Family is being despised by these weak civilians? How dare they?! Who gave them the guts?!

"Do you want to die?!" Quard roared, madness creeping into his mind. He even mobilized his mana to attack but suddenly, a curse mark glowed at the back of his palm that disrupted his control over mana.

"Arrghhh!!"

Black flashes of electricity swam all over Quard's body. He can't help but powerlessly lay his body on the carriage floor while hugging himself and crying from the pain.

It hurts so much! Never in his life did he experience something like this. It was a kind of pain that he would never forget.

Fortunately, the pain didn't last long. The black lightning soon vanished and Quard lay on the floor, his thickened saliva uncontrollably dripping down his opened mouth.

He looked no different than an abused dog now.

"Hey, kid, do you want to die even before being ripped to shreds by a magic beast? If not then shut your mouth!"

Before Quard can even recover, another criminal throws a kick at him in displeasure. He was about to lash out when he sensed something was wrong.

Whether it be the bastard who kicked him or the other people in the carriage, everyone was looking at him with dark expressions on their faces.

These people... they are not normal! They are exuding danger that causes all the hair on Quard's body to stand.

They are dangerous! Extremely dangerous!

Quard can't help but shudder and the little rationality he had left helped him figure out why these people are dangerous.

They are criminals... in order for a citizen in the City of Hope to be forced into military service for life, their crimes should be heavy enough. One crime that is the easiest for them to be convicted of is if their deeds involve... killing.

Yes, the danger he could sense was all from the killing intent of the criminals.

"Tsk, be thankful of the curse mark. If not for it, I would have killed you already. Too bad, aside from when we are to fight against the magic beasts, the curse mark will be activated if we try to use magic" the criminal that threw a kick at Quard commented.

He sounds as if not for the curse, he would have killed Quard right then and there. In fact, he might have really done that if not for the curse mark.

"N-no..." Quard despaired but no matter what he felt, he was too powerless to change anything.

After some time, the carriage finally arrived at their destination. Even from afar, the sound of fighting can be heard. Enjoy exclusive content from empire

Magic fluctuations continue to spread as one explosion after another occurs. The scent of blood and gore in the air was extremely strong.

Even a Senior Rank Mage using a water-type spell to clean the area might not be able to remove the fishy scent of blood.

The carriage's destination was none other than the walls protecting the City of Hope. It was one of the most dangerous battlefields with the highest death rate.

While there are many Senior Mages stationed here, so are the number of Senior Rank beasts.

Despite the fact that there were troublesome crimson gates that could teleport magic beasts directly inside the city, the best way to destroy humanity was still to attack from the walls.

The crimson gates are limited. Only a certain number of magic beasts can come out at a time. If they were to dispatch magic beasts that have a large body, only one of them might be able to come out at a time.

With that being the case, humanity can easily defend themselves if they are being attacked by a limited number of magic beasts at a time.

As such, the magic beasts still don't stop attacking the walls that protect the humans inside. They can send more magic beasts at a time compared to when using the crimson gates.

The number of humans and magic beasts alike that died in this place is uncountable.

"All of you get out and help. Go fight the magic beasts!"

The drivers of the carriages said coldly before opening the cages. With the curse mark that these criminals have, they do not have the power to resist.

If they don't want to die, they must do their best to contribute and kill the magic beasts.

For those who are uncooperative, it's fine. They can still be used as bait. While a magic beast is biting down on the bait, the others can then take the chance to attack and bring it down.

As such, even if the criminal is uncooperative, they can still serve some purpose.

"No... please!" Quard cried out but his plea was useless. The mages threw him and the other criminals outside the walls to fight the magic beasts.

"Arghhhhh!!"

Suddenly, Quard heard a piercing scream and when he turned his head at the source, he saw the criminal that kicked him earlier being violently ripped in half by a magic beast.

It was not only him, the other criminals were also dying one by one. Most of them are fighting desperately for a chance of survival but in this place, survival is luxury.

Even the strong can fall! As for the reason? It was simple!

As far as Quard's eyes can see, magic beasts of all kinds can be seen. Some are flying, some are on the ground. Some are small, some large. Some are humanoid, some have a completely beastly body.

The magic beasts came in all sorts of sizes and appearances. Their number was simply astonishing.

If not for the protection of the walls and the various war weapons that are being used along with the mages fighting the magic beasts and preventing them from reaching the walls, no doubt that humanity would have perished already.

Magic continuously erupted but no matter how much magic was used, it felt like the number of magic beasts were endless. There was simply no time for rest and to catch up one's breath.

The two opposing sides have a simple goal that they want to achieve. The humans want to kill the magic beasts and the magic beasts want to kill the humans.

It was simply a matter of differences between the two races and there was no right or wrong.

How could there be a righteous and evil side when both sides are set on eradicating the other and wouldn't stop unless that is achieved?
